Employment and Career

This website is not a Career search or job training resource.   For the big picture:

  1. Think about what you really want from your life.
  2. How does work fit into that?
  3. Think about what you want from yourwork-life.
  4. Identify careers can that can provide what you want.
  5. What fields fascinate or move you?
  6. Be careful what ladder you are climbing.  Get on the ladder you want to be on.  Pick your field and then look for jobs in that field, even if they are low level and seemingly not related.  You can build contacts this way.
  7. Realize that no one job can provide everything.  Areas that work leaves lacking can be fulfilled in other parts of your life.
  8. Realize you will have to work your way up and that takes time.
  9. Experience matters.   Even boring entry-level job experience helps.
  10. Network.  Build up a list of employers who will think of you when a job comes up.
  11. Intern or volunteer to build your experience and skills
  12. Take control: what can you do to build your job skills
  13. While job hunting and working, it’s about what you can do for the company, not what they can do for you.
  14. Cultivate relationships. Set your self up.
  15. Be professional.  If you want to be taken seriously, be a pro.
  16. Be hardworking, reliable, and thorough.
