Needs vs. Wants

“I had to really think through what I really wanted and what I needed. Not fun. But its’ going to help my cause.”
Lisa, Tacoma

Remember to distinguish your needs from your wants. Generally, needs are things you need to survive and that are necessary for you to maintain a living: shelter, food, transportation, limited phone service. Creating an emergency budget, which is the lowest amount of money you can survive on every month, is a great exercise to help you distinguish between needs and wants. Be especially careful in thinking about those things you “need” for your job or career. Yes, you may need a car to get to work, but that does not mean you have to get the latest and greatest vehicle; either way, you’re just getting to work.
